Spiders in Space

Spiders are very common in our property in the province. This is one of the most obvious among them as this is the biggest, as well as the biggest webs. Sometimes their houses are on top of tall tress, or in between gaps of two trees. Even if they are found in many places, I am scared of them. This might be due to their size as well as the very sticky webs which are very difficult to remove on your body or clothing.

The webs sometimes glitter in the morning specially after the rain.

I see several webs with newly hatched eggs, but this one seems to be the only baby left on its brood.

  1. Andrea, Wonderful cobwebs indeed! You managed to capture them very clearly. Couldn't view the last photo even though I refreshed several times. I'm eager to see it.

  3. Spiders are always captivating but repulsing to me at the same time...as long as they are far enough away, I can't resist checking them out but they do give me heebee jeebies.

  4. I respect spider and won't kill them because I know they have a job to do....but they still give me the heebie jeebies.

  5. I'm allergic to spider bites so I'm more than scared of them.

  8. I always am amazed how many view images of spiders and don't see the natural beauty of form, colors, crazy physiology, and even the photographer's competence, but instead use adjectives that state their feelings about the spiders instead. Certainly not anything wrong with that, it just seems pretty common that people are turned off by them. When I posted closeups of spiders, I got some comments that included disgusting, repulsive and hideous. I was a little saddened and even felt bad for posting.

  9. Cute spiders Lrong, you must be joking. Mind you I can tolerate them. Not so sure of the ones which you show us today Andrea, great pics though.

  10. That fourth shot of the spider in the web is exceptional, Andrea! Have you ever heard that killing a spider brings bad luck? When I was 12, I almost stepped on a tarantula... on purpose... but my mother caught me and stopped me... I was in bare feet! Not one of my more brilliant moves. LOL!

  11. One - I am glad you appreciate my webs, because I had difficulties getting them, LOL. They are some of those very difficult to photograph, but this time I had taken a lot and some left here are still nice, i think.

NHGarden - thanks for the appreciation, i am grateful.

Cat - you are not alone, many are repulsed by spiders even if they are friends of human.

Rohrerbot - that is a common feeling to many.

Carletta - thank you for the appreciation, i told One above i had difficulties getting them.

ladyfi - thank you for dropping here again.

Lrong - We have spiders in the house too, big and small. They naturally live there without our knowing, we just allow them to catch the mosquitoes, but the cats sometimes kill or eat them.

  12. Donna of GWGT - yes people really can't detach their feelings from the objects of our posts, and yes you are right. I am also scared of this type of spider, but I love how they appear in photos. I am also much challenge taking the webs as it is difficult to get, I am not yet successful in getting dewdrops on the webs. I am glad they are perennially present in our areas, so I have ready models when I feel like taking them.

Alistair - I smiled at your comment. Maybe Lrong is talking of the house spiders, which are either very small which catch flies and the really big round ones, which are also scary, carying the big round white egg sacs. haha! Thanks for appreciating my shots.

Francisca - I appreciate your extreme description for my fourth shot. I really love it for the kaleidoscopic iridescence it emits. A 12 yr old is still brave, but even when we were kids we were already scared of this type of spider, common in our orchard. We don't have that belief here, but i think that is true for stepping on the tarantula, haha!

Pat - thank you so much for your kind words.

  13. Now I laugh back after my childhood at the spider games the boys used to play. They will catch spiders for fighting games and keep them in match boxes. Some of them feed the spiders with leaves, not knowing that spiders are not vegetarians! The webs that you have capture here are very beautiful indeed. Looks very intricate.

  14. Autumn Belle - i thought you will not be seeing my post anymore, LOL. Do you know that I was able to see those spider games of boys just now when my nephew was at that age! He is now 13 and already past that. He said there are many kinds of game spiders, and he showed me maybe 4 types. There are those he calls 'bakla' or gay, those which ran when confronted by another. My mother even join him looking for spiders at night with flashlight, maybe my mother also enjoyed it, and I watched how the winning spider conquered the looser by covering it with its sticky saliva. Then I learned the winner will sip the juice of the looser and after a night inside the matchbox, the winner will be a lot bigger. I also learned that already as an adult.

But the spiders i posted are the big ones, which are scary for most of the boys. Those used for games are only maybe 3-4mm, these are about 3inches in length. The first are also just found under the leaves, sometimes with an inch web, the latter has wide webs of sometimes 3-4 ft in diameter!

  15. Wonderful shots! I love the light on the webs. Very nice. Thanks for letting me know that it takes too long for my page to open. I have shortened it now.

  16. Creepy spiders Andrea. I know they are so important but my imagination just cannot feel safe around them. Silly I know. I have noted many stunning aspects to some in their colors and patterns while devouring some moth or butterfly in my garden. I think it is how they are so able to sneak into places and surprise one . . . sometimes with awful bites.

  17. I don't mind spiders, in fact they play an important role in the garden as they prey on pests too. At least the spiders here are not as sinister looking as the ones you can sometimes find in the Philippines :)

  18. beautifully captured cobwebs. i used to fight spiders with our neighbors, i was a little tomboy :)

  19. I've shot glittering morning webs but their owners are usually out hunting. I really don't like spiders much. You captured some great shots.

  20. Teresa - thanks for your kind words, you're welcome too.

Carol - creepy and scared are maybe common reactions of people to spiders, I feel the same way with this type of spider. But with smaller ones I am not. In our place, I haven't heard of anyone being bitten by this spider, yet most kids are scared of them, because maybe of the looks and the big size.

Mark and Gaz - you know we have lots of spiders here, this is just the biggest and most conspicuous, so its always available for my lens.

Rohit Saren - thanks for appreciating my fourth photo, Francisca also said so!

Photo Cache - I was a little tomboy too, but i wasn't able to play with those small game spiders with boys. I saw them just lately when my young nephew play with them.

Cheryl - thanks for appreciating my shots, and the visit here. I hope you come again soon.

  21. I am not very fond of spiders either, although they can be quite beautiful--and their webs, especially so! Thanks for these great photos!
