After the landscapes, the orchids

I will confess that I am biased when it comes to orchids. I like all of them, I look at them with awe, they are all beautiful. However, when it comes to preference, i am more attracted to the Vanda. The photos i am posting here are all hybrids and the last two are the nearest in morphology and color to our native Vanda (Euanthe) sanderiana, which locally we call 'waling-waling'.

Originally, the waling-waling is found growing high up on big trees in the rainforest. It has been discovered a long time ago, and already considered the grand-grand parents of most Vanda hybrids now in the commercial trade. Many inter-generic hybrids are also produced with this Vanda sanderiana as one of the parents. Examples of these intergeneric hybrids are Aranda (Arachnis x Vanda), Ascosenda (Ascocentrum x Vanda), Mokara (Arachnis x Ascocentrum x Vanda), Vascostylis (Ascocentrum x Rhyncostylis x Vanda), and more. Photos are from the ongoing Philippine Orchid Society Show at the Quezon Memorial Circle.

  1. What amazing photos of these beautiful Vandas, Andrea! My favourites are the dark blue ones - I am very partial to blur flowers.

Thank you for participating in Floral Friday Fotos, look forward to seeing your photos each week.

    1. Hahaha, Nick i think you had to put the 2nd comment because i really have the 'blurred' photo and i might think you like that! I can't get a good one as it is so hot there and the plants are sometimes so high up for me to get a good focus. I know that's not a good excuse, but i will try again!

Yes, i think most of us are particularly leaning on choosing the blues! thanks.

  3. The last two are my favourites - how lovely to have the dark and light pink in one flower. My garden is really too shady for orchids to flower, but when they do I get very excited.

  6. It would be so neat to visit a rain forest and see these growing in the trees. How beautiful and exotic that would be!

    1. Yes Tina, it would be nice if there is still a place like that. These days it can only be found in artificially developed settings intentionally attached to trees in some rich peoples home gardens. The collectors are partly responsible in depleting these from the forests.

  9. These are beautiful display of the orchids. The "spotted" ones are my favorite. I went to the Arboretum for two consecutive weekends in February and saw lots of them.

    1. Imagine the expenses of providing habitat for them in arboretum in temperate climates, when here they are just in the open with top nets.

  11. Andrea I was never much into orchids but I must say you have turned my head. I have an orchid that needs help to grow and bloom in my office...it belongs to someone else but I am the gardener so I am helping to restore it...I have researched a bit on how to grow them and have my work cut out for me but I believe it will be worth it...

    1. Donna, It might be a bit difficult to grow in an office environment. Maybe that is more challenging than growing in the normal habitat. So what happened to it now? What orchid is that?

  13. Andrea, I love the Vanda as well. The design on the flowers are striking and I like how they cluster together. Wonderful plants BUT I fail with them here in the desert.....too much work:) I'm glad you've been writing more. Remember when I wrote that I was going to cut back on writing....well it hasn't happened. You were doing well at first, but I notice you're writing more often again:) Oneness has stuck to her New Years Resolution however:) Hope you have a wonderful Friday. All my best. Kreesh:)

    1. Kreesh, haha, I still prefer short discussions, that's the difference between the scientific mind vs the literary mind. And we normally write direct to the point, no elaborate adjectives and circuitous discussions. So you can almost guess what i do with long paragraphs...yes i just look at the photos! Sorry about that!

    1. They have them in your arboretum, i just don't know which states? You have lots of money to maintain tropical plants in temperate climates. The structures with controlled environments like temperatures and humidity are called phytotron, maybe they are what they commonly call conservatory.

  16. Very lovely... many of these cultivars are ones I haven't seen before. I only have one Vanda which is the one in your 5th photo... I have gotten it to rebloom once but it isn't looking quite as well this season... lower foliage is yellow and foliage in general is quite light colored. I'm wondering if the culprit is too much light (it's under T5 fixtures). I've enjoyed your beautiful post... Larry

  17. Fantastic shots and sensational colors in these photos. Finely tuned details are just perfect. Thanks for visiting and commenting on my blog. You had asked a question on mine, "Did you use a polarizing filter?" To be honest, I don't even know what that is :) I'm not a professional photographer, just love snapping shots. Thank you and have a great week.

  24. What beautiful flowers and photos. I had an orchid once but after it flowered it never flowed again. Eventually I forgot about it, it dried out and I threw it away.

    1. Oh I am so sorry about that, but it happened to many of my orchids before. When they didn't receive much care they succumbed to disease, of course after famine there will be disease, and in a little while they died. So until i am at fully at home, i will not buy orchid plants again.

  25. Love the Vanda. Your post reminds me of attending orchid shows with my late father. So many hybrids, so many colors. He would try to buy prize winning plants and propagate them. Regretfully, in the US, I have been successful in growing them for a long while, only to lose them weather changes they cannot adapt to :( I would say, Cymbidiums, Paphiopedilum and Phalaenopsis are the easiest for me to grow in San Diego. Thank you for taking such beautiful pictures for us to enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because San Diego is colder than us here, those Genus will be performing well there. But with our climate, terete Vanda will be the easiest to care for, and of course Dendrobium. We have Phals in colder climes like highlands and near the mountains. I love Paphiopedilum but nowhere can they withstand our very hot dry season in the province.

  27. Andrea- I am speechless. And people who know me realize that is rare! The blue one I'm particular is really a marvel. I know that breeders if other types of flowers try - and fail- to achieve that royal blue. I really do appreciate the opportunity to see these. Thanks!

    1. Hi Libby thanks for coming over, i think this is your first time here. You should come more often as i post orchids already many times in the past, yearly actually. The blue Vanda has already been in the market maybe for >2 decades, there was the V rothschildiana and V coerulea, which are the most famous blue Vandas earlier.
