Philippine Orchid Show 2012

The Orchid Show in February, Flora Filipina 2012, is the 1st of the bi-annual events conducted by the Philippine Orchid Society. This first one is held with a 2-day conference of the advances in orchid growing with local and international speakers. I am very excited this time, as my friend from Hawaii who is a dendrobium and anthurium breeder is a speaker. After her talk, I left for the landscape exhibit.

The weather was so hot and humid, except for a few minutes of overcast skies. Fortunately, it is just the 2nd day and not so many people are in the exhibit areas. I saw many enthusiasts with big DSLRs who came alone trying to get good shots despite the very bright sun. It is good for them it is not very crowded, most people are in the commercial booths to buy some plants.

The exhibit area is placed inside the Quezon Memorial Circle gardens, also planted with many interesting plants. I actually shot some plants from these areas. I was in the show for practically the whole day, until my feet retired on me. I will show here some of the landscape designs.

The theme posted at the gate of the exhibit area is patterned after the Tourism's slogan:
"there's more fun in the Philippines". The vertical structure is planted with different types of
ferns and bromeliads.

Phalaenopsis are the focal plants here, joined by other smaller orchids.  The buildings are permanent ground structures which provided the background.

Tne hanging violet dendrobium is our native D. anosmum locally called 'sanggumay', with very sweet fragrance.  It makes the area around this design sweetly scented.

This arch symbolizes the Philippine fiesta, where archs are usual structures in approaching a place, a church, a special gathering area, most especially during the traditional 'Santacrusan or Flores de Mayo', where beautiful ladies in formal gowns join a procession of flowers to honor the Saint or the Virgin Mary.

not only orchids are displayed, as this is a bonsai garden

while this is a desert garden

and another cactus garden collection. Naturally planted plants at the site provided background.

There are still other landscape designs, but I was not able to get nice shots of them, so i might not give justice if i post them.

  2. What a lovely show. I would love to add more to my orchid collection, but they are an expensive habit, so maybe one here and there.

Those hanging purple ones are wonderful.

    1. Thanks to Autumn Belle, i can now directly reply here. Those hanging purple ones are cheap here because they are native, but oh, even if it's a bit expensive the sweet scent will really delight you, especially if you will be having tea or coffee under a tree in the garden, heavenly.

  3. I love the photo with the hanging dendrobium and the bromeliads. If I lived in the tropics i would fill a whole garden with these.

    1. Yes Melanie, those hanging dendrobium are lovely and the scent heavenly. It is nice and delightful to read a book with a cup of coffee under a tree where they are hanging! It relieves the stresses with its sweet scent. haha!

  4. When I saw the blue tiled roof, I know right away it is a Japanese themed garden.

These are a great display of flowers. I love the cluster of blue orchids.

    1. The cluster of blue vanda is always my favorite. I didn't put that design here yet because i thought it needs a page on its own, it's coming soon!

  5. Absolutely stunning displays. The flowers look so beautiful, and they make the visit so interesting. My hats off to the landscapers and gardeners responsible. Lovely photos!

    1. Yes, the landscapers and gardeners are really good to have thought of those. Unfortunately, i pity some plants as some direct sunlight burned their leaves even after one day. The black net above it cannot fully safeguard them during the afternoon sun.

  6. What a lovely respite for me to visit your flower show! I carried Phalaenopsis Orchids 45 years ago when I got married. I would love to see that Bonsai exhibit.

    1. Hi Barb, thanks for your visit. My photos cannot do justice to their beauty in natural setting. In our area, it is difficult to grow Phals as it needs colder temperatures and high humidity. I also posted some bonsai in my previous posts last January when we had another garden show here.

  7. I would have spent most of the day there too - such great displays.

    1. Thanks Missy, but these temporary displays are not at par with the normally growing orchids in some gardens like those you visited. But we have gardens like that too here, the participants of the conference have tours this week to farms and resorts like that.

    1. Hi Donna, with our high temperatures, cactus are thriving well. Yes it is surprising to see cactus in an orchid show, maybe they want to fully utilize the space, haha!

  11. Hi Andrea, Oh how I love seeing those gardens. They remind me of what we have INSIDE at the Biltmore conservatory... But--yours are outside. That is awesome. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Yes Betsy, yes it is awesome outside as if they are in their natural environment although of course it is not. If you come over for the waterfalls, time it with garden shows and i am gladly offering my humble self as your tour guide, LOL.

  13. Andrea what beautiful displays you chose...I love the bonsai and cactus since they were so different but I must say all were so beautiful...to hear the words hot and humid....in the summer we tend to complain here that it is hot and humid but then I think of winter and smile and go on in the garden not minding it at all anymore...very wet and cold here again...what a wonderful Flora show you have there!

  14. Hi Andrea,
Garden shows like this are always inspiring aren't they? We have a similar garden show coming up here next month and I so am looking forward to it. With the recession, the big displays are less ostentatious, but still fun to see.
There is a very nice range of displays here; everything from a dessert to a Japanese garden. I bet all the displays filled with orchids were especially wonderful to see.

  15. Lovely displays Andrea, thanks for sharing! Quezon Memorial Circle seems a happening place lately, a far cry from what it was when I was still living there! :)

  18. Andrea, I really like how you capture the whole shot. The designs are really unique and tastefully done. The bamboo art of yellow and orange is really cool looking. And the ramada with the curtains is really inviting and would be a lovely addition to someone's backyard. Thank you for sharing these unique setup ideas:) Every area has their own set up. In Tucson, the designs are a bit different so it's interesting to see the differences between cultures.

  20. Are those Cattleyas planted on the ground in the 2nd pic?

  21. Ok, so this is kinda pathetic to comment on, but I am really digging the red-painted bamboo! It's such a cool landscape accent!
