Orchids again, Rhynchostylis gigantea

I took a break from posting orchids because you might get tired of them. So after posting the nipple fruit and Hibiscus as intermissions, i am back again to the orchids. Remember, i still have a lot of orchid photos in my files. So you will still have them in the future.

Now here i will be featuring the very beautiful and fragrant Rhynchostylis gigantea. Sometimes it is called foxtail orchid because of the form of the spike. It is also prolific that sometimes 3-4 spikes are present in one plant at the same time. It grows abundantly at high temperatures and humidity, which our country is sufficiently provided for. It also grows in a wide range of light conditions, such that many countries grow it. I am lucky to have 4 colors for posting here all at once. They were in the exhibit in the last garden show by the Philippine Orchid Society. It is said that R. gigantea subs. violaceae is endemic to the Philippines.

A few years back i have this in my garden, but because of neglect it just gave a very small spike and later on succumbed to pests. I did not replace it because i am not the one tending them all the time, as i am an absentee gardener, returning home sometimes once a month. I would like to share the photos with you I hope you enjoyed them, i will just keep the fragrance for myself.

  2. Yes, I second anartisgarden. If you blog is only about orchids alone, I think I will never ever get tired of seeing orchids. If possible, do include some tips on how to grow orchids and make orchids bloom. Now, I am starting to get dreamy about the fragrance you are talking about in this post!

  4. Well, well, well, how can i resist that. What type of orchids do you want to know. James, i am specifically asking you which do you want to know first.haha. It seems like orchids are seeping through my consciousness these days, or circumstances are doing so. Yesterday, i asked someone from the Intellectual Property Office for help with our application, and before giving me help asked me to help her first with her orchids. She will invite me to her home because i cannot diagnose the problem unless i see them. Doctors are like that, esp the MDs! So will you and Autumn Belle invite me to your homes so i can diagnose your problem? just kidding. waiting for your problem James.

  24. Andrea I'll never tire at looking at your orchid photos - I am just used to seeing phalenopsis, denrobriums, oncidiums, cattelyas, cymbidiums and miltonia over here in the shops so seeing more of the unusual ones is great.

Andrea tips on getting them to flower again would be great as I am always being asked this and it would be great to get some new information. Now the most popular variety people ask me about is the phalenopsis so I would be interested in what you would tell someone about getting it back into flower. Do you suggest they leave the stem on to see if another branch comes from a node further down the stem or would you suggest them cutting the stem down? I'll be interested to hear your thoughts

  25. Oh i have lots of visitors now! Thank you all for your inspiring comments. For Rosie of Leaves n Bloom, i already replied on Phalaenopsis question via your new post. Thank you very much.

  27. Hi Andrea thanks for answering my question - it made me giggle at the end as I would have to go and speak to myself as I am one of those exps. I'm always interested in finding out if others have tips and tricks that I am unaware of.

  28. Andrea, you are always welcome to my home and garden. My dendrobiums (see my latest post) blooms only one single flower per stalk. How to make it bloom more e.g. in bunches to a stalk? Am I too greedy?
