Work turned Vacation!

I left the big city last Thursday night for an official trip regarding Trademarks. I will also deliver the Certificate of Registration for the trademark they applied for. Our plane left at 4:50pm to Zamboanga City, in Mindanao, so we went south. There was actually a typhoon in Luzon when i left, which made the 1 hour 20 min flight like a seemingly "wonderful" ride. We received a good shaking while inside the clouds. I wonder what the other passengers were thinking. I was on a window seat and i saw only white clouds. At least they are white because if gray or black, more turbulence will be experienced. I even had to hold my cup of coffee above the table, otherwise I might spill it over. I even asked God to be our pilot, to be sure! We were inside the clouds from take off to touchdown. Thanks God we touched land safely.

So Friday activity was finished and Saturday was free. I am so lucky the boss and the assistant boss also studied in my university, and one of them also worked at the same department i worked after graduation. So it was like a sort of re-bonding moment, and i was very well attended to in this visit. Both of them have prior appointments and can't tour me around, so a driver was assigned to me that Saturday to go where i wanted.

We passed by a butterfly house and garden, and that certainly has a very potent pheromone for me to wander in. It is owned by a prominent political family there, so named after the matriarch, Maria Clara Lobregat Garden. The plants are looking good and well kept, and they have many blooming flowers outside the enclosures. However, only a few butterfly species are reared inside.

There are two netted domes in the property, separated by the administration area, above is one and the 2nd is shown below. Lovely blooms and towering ornamental trees are colorfully shown outside the butterfly domes.

Many hibiscus (gumamela) varieties, both traditional and hybrids are growing outside the domes. This multi-petalled orange variety is just one of them.

I am not sure if this is an Ixora variety, as there are no labels of the plants, and even the butterflies.

Lantana camara are luxuriantly growing in different areas.

I am also not familiar with the above, but it is so lovely and just about 3 ft high.

Berries of the white Duranta, there is also a lavender variety (below). However, the blue Duranta repens is not planted there.

Hypolimnas bolina, male (above and below)

Hypolimnas missipus, male, Danaid Egg-fly

COMMON THREE-RING, Ypthima sempera chaboras Fruhstorfer 1911
Nymphalidae; Satyrinae

larvae of Idea leuconoe

pupa and exoskeleton of the pupa of Idea leuconoe

adult Idea leuconoe

  1. Hi there - great set of pictures - the butterflies are great.

I have no idea if my 'earth stars' are edible - if they are you would need a lot to make a meal! They are only about as wide as my thumb nail.

    Cheers - Stewart M

    1. Photo Cache/ewok, i am a bit scared too, reason why i called God to pilot us! I drowned myself with the plane's coffee even if it is not really that good. I am glad the flight is just over an hour! Thanks for the visit.

  11. Glad you are okay after the initial 'shaking'. This place looks very calm and serene. I like the no name flowers you photographed here. I am looking for a duranta with that shade of pale purple to plant in my garden. It is really beautiful.

    1. Oh Autumn Belle, that pale purple duranta produces very few flowers unlike the white and the blue. We have it in the province as hedgerows near the street, not lovely in reality. Photos lie. If i were you, i will just plant the blue! I survived the shaking, but I am now terribly coughing, so I am absent from work.

  18. What a fascinating post, Andrea! The pupa and exoskeleton of the pupa of Idea leuconoe would make a wonderful design for a necklace and/or earrings! Your photography is stunning ... so crisp and colourful. I wonder if the Ixora is scented ... it is similar to a plant I was given a long time ago.

    1. Oh yes Caroline, those pupa into earings will be wonderful, i just don't know how to strengthen them! Maybe some creative inventors can do that. I am sorry about that Ixora-looking flower, i didn't smell it. It was actually the first time i saw that kind. Thank you so much for your kind words...If you learned of doing the pendants and earings out of the pupa, i will be your supplier of raw materials.

  19. So many stunning flowers and butterflies...I also have lantana in my containers as they are not hardy here. I would have not been a good companion on that flight...give me drugs to sedate me...what a nice trip it turned out to be for you

  23. Great photos Andrea! It seems a lot of garden bloggers are traveling at this time. So hard to play catch up upon returning isn't it? Work backlog, over 500 posts to read on my Google reader, preparing my own posts, caring for the garden. How do you manage? BTW, did you have curacha while you were there? With the special sauce? Alavars (?) ba yun?

  24. That lantana simply loves it in the Phillipines! Very luxurious for sure. The caterpillar is waaay cool. I would love to see some chrysalis and the cats hatch out.
